Showcasing Macao's magnificent blend of East-West cultures
Macao, August 19, 2025 — To welcome the arrival of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Wynn is pleased to shine a light on porcelain, an exquisite art form with a rich history spanning thousands of years. To honor this traditional artistic medium, Wynn has collaborated with talented young Macao ceramic artist Aki Cheong to masterfully weave Chinese and Portuguese ceramic art into the designs of this year's mooncake gift set which is cleverly shaped like a Chinese Mid-Autumn lantern. This collaboration perfectly complements the first "Wynn Culture" flagship project which is now showing as an "Art Macao" Special Exhibition. Titled "Hello China, Hello Macao – The Odyssey of Jingdezhen Porcelain: A Heritage Voyage from Macao to the World", this immersive porcelain digital art exhibition further illustrates Wynn's vision of "promoting outstanding Chinese traditional culture and fostering mutual exchange and appreciation between diverse civilizations".
In a nod to Macao's unique East-West cultural heritage, the design of this year's lantern-shaped mooncake gift bag incorporates a blend of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain and Portuguese Azulejo ceramic tiles. The front of the bag features Chinese Doucai "lotus scrolls" which have been eloquently painted in "imperial colors" (once used exclusively by the ancient imperial court). The special lotus scroll patterns are inspired by the ceramic window grilles which grace local Chinese architecture in Macao. Integrated with the Chinese design are Portuguese blue-and-white Azulejos featuring Macao's iconic floral emblem – the lotus – to symbolize elegance, luxury and happiness. The design on the back of the bag vividly depicts the beauty of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, with exquisite peony and butterfly patterns as well as a contrast of light and dark hues. The sides of the bag feature auspicious motifs like ruyi patterns and plantain leaves, which symbolize success and prosperity in one's career. The design not only portrays the significat cultural exchanges between the East and the West during the time of the Maritime Silk Road and the importance of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China, but also symbolizes Wynn's well wishes for properity, wealth and happiness.
The mooncake gift box design and the Jingdezhen-made porcelain vase-shaped bag charm are inspired by the famous Buccleuch Vases from the Wynn Art Collection Dating back to the Qing Dynasty (1796-1820), the pristine quartet of Buccleuch Vases have not been pierced or cut to accommodate the French ormolu mounts which were added on in the early 19th century. The vases were kept intact out of respect for the integrity of the porcelain, to retain their tremendous artistic value and to preserve their historical significance. A magnificent blend of Chinese ceramic craftsmanship and elegant European decorative art, the vases are a valuable testament to a time in history (the 18th and 19th centuries), when the convergence of Chinese and Western art was at its peak. In 2011, Wynn acquired the extraordinary vases to bring them back "home" to China. They are now on display at the West Promenade of Wynn Palace, where guests are welcome to enjoy a complimentary, up-close viewing of these "national treasures". The rare baluster-shaped Chinese porcelain vases feature Buddhist and Daoist symbols referencing themes of prosperity, happiness and longevity. These designs not only embody the elegance and sophistication of traditional Chinese culture but also convey Wynn's warmest wishes to all.
Young ceramic artist Aki Cheong, whose birthplace is Macao, is the co-creator of the 2025 Wynn Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake gift set. As a Macao native, she has been profoundly influenced by both Chinese and Western cultures for as long as she can remember. Passionate about ceramics, she moved to China's "porcelain capital" of Jiangxi to study at Jingdezhen Ceramic University. While in Jingdezhen, she introduced Macao's intangible cultural heritage of Portuguese Azulejo craftsmanship as part of an important cultural exchange, where ceramics were used to engage in modern artistic dialogue. Today, she remains committed to skillfully blending traditional artistic elements from the East with Azulejo techniques from the West. Her works are a celebration of both past and present, showcasing the uniquely rich and diverse heritage of Macao, where ancient and modern cultures from around the world converge. One of her pieces, titled "Fixing", was selected for the 2025 Jingdezhen Taoxichuan International Art Exhibition "Borders in Flux".
Wynn is also partnering once again with Macao's famed October Fifth Bakery to present tea-flavored mooncakes.
